PARNELL POSTS CLEAR WIN AT KODIAK DEBATE
Incumbent Addresses Challenges, Talks Solutions for Commercial Fishing
Kodiak, AK – During a wide-ranging debate on commercial fishing held in Kodiak Friday, Governor Sean Parnell set himself apart from his challengers. In his opening remarks and question and answer session, the governor differentiated himself from the other candidates by highlighting his clear record of accomplishments for Alaska’s jobs and families this legislative session. As with his other appearances, he displayed a clear grasp of the details on fisheries issues before a full house.
This event marks the fourth debate Sean Parnell has participated in since March 11. During the wide-ranging two hour discussion of commercial fishing issues, the incumbent governor addressed offshore drilling, the longstanding balance between sport and commercial fishing, and the process by which the state makes fishing decisions.
Responding to a question on why the fishing industry hasn’t received the respect it deserves, Parnell said, “It’s a fact of life that the fishing industry is under-appreciated. Part of that is that population centers are not fishing communities. We can change that through more awareness. We can do that by electing a governor that is dedicated to the jobs and families of Alaska’s coastal communities.”
Sean Parnell noted his five policy goals for maintaining a vibrant fishing industry:
- Managing for abundant, sustainable fisheries
- Thriving coastal communities
- Value-added to Alaska’s fish
- Affordable energy and reliable transportation
- Continued entry-level opportunities for young Alaskans
“I’m running because I love Alaskans. It’s about creating jobs and opportunities for our families. We will seize the promise of Alaska,” Sean Parnell said in his closing statement at Friday’s debate. Parnell also said in a statement, “Alaskans deserve more than just promises, they deserve the experience and hard work that comes with governing. I’m glad to ask for their vote.”
